University course of study Thomas Lloyd participated in the first generation of real estate degree recipients, who are experienced Mexico real estate professionals, obtaining the degree through the exam and documentation process. It is also possible for university students, who are entering from high school (prepraratoria), to study for this as an undergraduate degree in a regular 4 year course of study. The degree will be offered in selected prestigious universities, public and private, recognized and authorized by SEP, with the purpose of creating a first generation of young real estate professionals, trained in theoretical knowledge with a degree and professional license before entering the practical world of real estate sales. The degree is intended to be rigorous, in-depth and serious. Implications in the Future of Mexico real estate The short term goal of the project is to continue promoting the exam and the degree. In the long term it is hoped that all those dedicated to the Mexico real estate industry will hold the degree and cedula professional - a situation similar that of doctors, lawyers, etc, according to Laura Flores. For the moment this will be a question of the laws in each region or state; for example, at least the broker of each real estate office may be required to hold the degree. While these kinds of requirements will be worked out regionally, and perhaps on a national level in the future, the existence of this degree represents a significant step forward in the Mexico real estate industry. As already mentioned, this program will not only offer a degree, but also a professional license (cedula profesional). Unlike the United States, these professional licenses are issued at a national rather than a state level, and are only granted to university degree holders. The process of receiving the degree and professional license in Mexico is now more professional than obtaining a real estate license in the U.S. or Canada. There are stricter requirements, and the test is applied in a more secure, professional setting. This level of professionalism and standards indicates a promising future in terms of professionalism and client confidence in the Mexico’s real estate industry. Closing comments Once again, congratulations to AMPI, to CONOCER, to SEP, to all of the efforts and dedication from many people in the industry, and to Thomas Lloyd for being part of the first generation of Mexico real estate professionals to complete this exam receive the real estate degree and professional license. It will be a pleasure to see others follow these footsteps, bringing Mexico’s real estate industry forward.
