The plaza would provide a space for musical and artistic events, and serve as a tourist attraction and ongoing recreation for residents. A proposal has also been made to recognize the Merida General Cemetery an official historic monument. The cemetery dates from the early years of Mexico's independence (early 1800's) and is part of the identity of the municipality. As an official historic site, it would be protected and maintained with special attention. Also near Merida there are the ancient ruins of the world-famous Chichen Itza, which has recently been named one of the New Wonders of the World. But Chichen Itza is only a taste of what is available; there are innumerable ancient ruins in the area. In fact, there are so many awe inspiring Mayan pyramid sites that tourists do not have enough time to fully enjoy them, and it would take a long time for anyone who lives here to exhaust all the possibilities. While this rich cultural atmosphere is attractive for tourists, it is best enjoyed by residents. Historic Merida real estate is available at excellent prices.
