Researchers from all around the world are suggesting that we supplement our diet with omega 3 fatty acids. This is because the food we eat these days does not contain enough Omega 3 to satisfy our bodies needs. The food are just too low in the Omega 3s. As the title suggests, epa and dha are the two most potent forms of Omega 3 fatty acids. And they are found in fish and fish oil. There is a third type of Omega 3. This type is called ALA, and it is found in flaxseed, leafy greens and nuts. However ALA needs to be converted by our body over to epa and dha before it can be used. This does not always happen efficiently, especially if you are in ill health or are elderly. To me this is a major drawback to eating this type of food. There is a breakfast cereal out now, that includes flaxseed, I am sure that this is being hailed as a really healthy cereal by vegetarians and vegans. However I am elderly and my health is not the best, so I do not think I would get any benefit from eating this cereal. I think I will have to stick with an Omega 3 fish oil supplement each day, for my epa and dha needs. The best Omega 3 epa and dha fish oil comes from fish that swim in cold deep waters, preferably from the pristine waters around New Zealand. The fish that are best used are Hoki, Mackerel, trout sardines , Salmon and Tuna. The company that I buy my oil from uses Hoki and Tuna to make their oil. This gives them a unique oil that has double the anti-inflammatory properties of other highly concentrated oils. It is an unfortunate fact of life that most of us in the western world are deficient in these essential fatty acids. Our body does not manufacture these essential fats, so we must obtain them from the food we consume. As I mentioned up above, most of the foods these days are low in these fats. It therefore would pay us to take a daily dose of Omega 3 supplements.
