There have been literally thousands of articles written about the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids. However some people are still asking are there any fish oil adverse effects when taking an Omega 3 supplement. The answer to that is, it depends. It depends on the type of oil you are taking. If you are taking a normal Omega 3 supplement, then the answer is you would need to take an awful lot of the oil to do you any harm. However if you are taking Cod Liver Oil, the you can suffer from fish oil adverse effects. It is the vitamin A in the cod liver oil that causes these adverse effects however. Vitamin A is toxic in large doses. Be very wary about taking anything that comes from the liver of fish. You must remember it is the vitamin A that is toxic, not the fish oil. I must remind you that fish oil is a natural blood thinner, and if you are already on prescription type blood thinners or aspirin to thin your blood, then you should consult your doctor before starting a course of these Omega 3 supplements. I take aspirin to thin my blood, but my doctor still says it is OK to take 2,000 mg per day of Omega 3 supplements. There are very few fish oil adverse effects. Very high doses of fish oil may cause bloating, nausea, flatulence and belching, although I have found that belching normally occurs when the oil is not fresh. Very high doses of this oil may lead to a slightly fishy body odour. There was some concern that very high doses of oil could lead to internal bleeding. However a study of people with heart disease who were taking 8,000mg of fish oil supplements per day in addition to aspirin (an anti-coagulant) found no increase in internal bleeding. Some studies found high doses of fish oil worsen blood sugar control in people with diabetes. Other studies have found there to be no effect. To be on the safe side, people with diabetes should take no more than 2,000 mg of fish oil per day. If in doubt, consult your doctor.
