You've probably heard it a hundred times that cold water fishes like salmon, tuna, mackerel are rich source of both DHA and EPA essential fatty acids. And so are the products like salmon omega3 supplements derived from these oily fishes. But have you ever wondered? With so many fish oils available in the market, how to pick the best and most effective one? Product that is best today may not remain at same position tomorrow. Until recently, salmon omega3 fishoil supplements were considered to be the best; but not anymore. Let us find out what is better and why? First reason that salmon omega3 not believed to be as good as it once was, is because its DHA content is low. With the recent studies it has been proved that DHA is the most important omega 3 fatty acids needed by our body. Body has an irreversible process to convert DHA to EPA. Thus, an effective supplement has high DHA to EPA ratio. Ideally this ratio should be 2:1. It is observed that in a 1000mg salmon fishoil capsule, only 160 mg of DHA is present; where as the other products offered today have as high as 280mg of DHA per 1000 mg of soft gel. Secondly, Salmon omega 3 supplements are expensive. This is because salmon is a common fish and more people eat it regularly. Fish-oils from less popular fishes yet high in DHA levels are not expensive. Be careful of toxicity levels in a cheap salmon supplements. Manufactures might not have removed all the harmful toxins and pollutants and so are charging less. Better Product Fish-oil extracted from fishes that are caught from pristine waters and are naturally high in DHA is better choice. e.g. Hoki fish-oil costs much less than salmon oils and its DHA content is substantially high. Hoki is a less known fish from southern coast of New Zealand where water is comparatively clean and pollution free. Studies have shown that mixture of Tuna oil and Hoki oil increases the anti-inflammatory properties by two and half folds. In the end, I would say, there is nothing wrong in the salmon omega3 supplements, they can be extremely beneficial. But because there are better products available out there in the market, why not shift to them. Do your own research, before you start on any supplements.
