Cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists sometimes refer to smile lines as nasolabial folds. They run from the bottom of the nose (nasus) to the corners of the mouth or lips (labium). They are the natural separation between the cheeks and the upper lip, but sometimes they become more pronounced, as part of the aging process, and people want to do something about them. So, what can we do? Cosmetic surgeons will usually recommend dermal fillers. These are injected into the deep fatty layer of tissue that lies beneath the dermis or directly into the dermis. They may be composed of fat, hyaluronic acid, collagen or synthetic filler. Some of the synthetic fillers are supposed to stimulate the body’s ability to make its own collagen. Whether or not that works depends on the individual. Decreased collagen production is one of the causes of sagging and wrinkles in the first place. So, it makes sense to try to stimulate the process…get things going again. But, finding something that really works for that purpose has been challenging. The disadvantages to injections and surgical procedures are several; pain, bruising, severe swelling, the formation of hard bumps beneath the skin and permanent scarring are among the adverse reactions that have been seen. Pronounced smile lines might be more attractive than those things. If you are bothered by your appearance, think that you look older than you feel or simply want your skin to be in the best health possible, there are some creams that you can try, before you resort to more dangerous procedures. As long as the creams contain safe ingredients, there are no risks associated with their use. The effectiveness depends on the ingredients, too, as well as the form and concentration that are used by the manufacturer. To make the biggest reduction in smile lines and other wrinkles, manufacturers should use the concentration and the form that have proven to be effective in clinical studies. You see, ingredients like coenzyme Q10 are known to be effective for wrinkle reduction, when they are applied topically. But, in order for coenzyme Q10 to penetrate, the molecules must be reduced in size. Some manufacturers include a small amount of COQ10, because the effectiveness of the ingredient is well known. Obviously, a tiny drop combined with inactive ingredients will not be effective for reducing smile lines. It’s just not possible. Even if the company includes a large amount, it won’t work, unless the molecules are small enough to penetrate. So, there are a number of things to consider before you buy an anti-aging cream. Are the ingredients safe and effective? Does the manufacturer use the right form at the right concentration? Were their proven results in clinical trials using that formulation? Those are good questions to ask. You might also want to check and see whether or not the manufacturer has signed the “compact for safe cosmetics”. That means that the company adheres to the stricter European standards for safety. It is possible to get rid of smile lines, safely. You just need to ask the right questions.
