You're waiting to hear back from two interviewers you met with last week; one you really want that's perfect and the other company, while a good choice, it isn't necessarily your first choice. And then the "good choice" contacts you with an offer. Do you accept it or scramble for a way to buy some time in hopes your first choice contacts you too? A. Harrison Barnes says it's not unreasonable to ask the company that offered you the job a little time to consider it. Most employers realize that's always a possibility and generally, they will agree to a certain timeframe for their candidates to consider what they've been offered. That said, it's never wise to take advantage of any courtesy extended the job seeker by a company. A. Harrison Barnes is also a career coach who has seen this scenario play out numerous times in the employment sector. He says most companies are aware if a candidate accepts the job and then is offered a position from his first choice, it really amounts to a waste of time and resources since the employee is more likely to resign so that he can accept the other company's offer. Employers are in the same boat as those looking for new careers; they know the importance of having the right candidate in the right job. Most applicants are afraid the offer will be rescinded if they request time to consider the merits. Couple this with a tough job market, and it makes sense why many begin to panic. We hear so much about the lack of jobs, despite the thousands that are available right now on EmploymentCrossing.com. Another fact some don't consider is that all employment databases are not the same. They reason that just because one job board has one hundred jobs listed, the other boards do too. A hasty decision is made without having all the facts. The truth is, EmploymentCrossing.com has more jobs listed than any of its competitors. Nursing jobs, government jobs and even military jobs can be found on this award winning site. It's not uncommon for the vast majority of open job candidacies are exclusively listed with EmploymentCrossing.com. While declining a definitive job offer in hopes your first choice will call can be risky, it really comes down to what you're comfortable doing. If you fear it's not a wise decision or if the offering employer declines to extend more time for you to consider the offer, you can always accept the position and make up your mind to deal with the other offer if and when it materializes. If, however, you're confident your first choice will contact you, it may be best for you to pass up the first job offer. Regardless of what you decide, it's important to play by the rules. Keep it honest and ethical and if you do receive your preferred job, you owe it to any other company that’s also extended an offer of employment the courtesy of a phone call to let them know you've chosen to decline.
