Life in a Typical Boot Camp

Advice,Family & Parenting
If your teen is going to boot camp, it is important that both parents and child know what to expect. The teen may be nervous and reluctant and the parent could be concerned their child will not benefit. Find out about the daily routine and activities and allow that knowledge to calm the parent and enthuse the teen.

Teen bootcamps are not military schools. The teens do not wear military uniforms and spend hours on route marches carrying heavy packs. In many ways a boot camp is like a summer camp only with more of an academic and disciplined approach to schooling.

Teens sleep in dormitory type rooms and are expected to make their own bed, tidy their area, do their own laundry and generally help out on the daily chores if required. They dine in a family atmosphere with other teens at the same table and often members of staff join the kids as well. Food is one of the major benefits especially if the teens are not eating well at home. Meals need to be nutritious and in plentiful supply. Teens can tend to grow quickly in those years and, together with all the outdoor activities, teens need the right energy from their meals. They eat well.

After breakfast, school classes begin. They could be in small groups and sometimes on a one-on-one basis. That's why many parents want their child to go to camp. They want their teen to get a solid boost in their academic progress and these academic times can do just that.

In the afternoon, many physical and outdoor activities take place. This could involve looking after animals, hiking, fishing, swimming and the like. Often these activities are team based thus giving the teens a challenge and a chance to develop team skills and self-discipline. There are wonderful opportunities to develop leadership qualities at these times.

In the late afternoon and evenings it's time for therapy sessions which can be small groups or even one-on-one. These are times when specific issues and problems are raised and discussed. The aim always is to give the teen's self-knowledge, to see where their lives are heading and how they can improve and turn out a confident and successful teenager.

There are many so-called normal things to do such as watching a movie in the common room, making a phone call home and reading books. The atmosphere is as close as possible to that of a happy family. These are all things which should be fully explained to both parents and the teen going to camp. It's not a strange and scary place but one where skills, love and respect are the basis for all programs.

There may often be extra activities like working on arts and crafts, going on field trips or even working on projects within the local community. A boot camp aims to be a helpful and hopeful place. It exists to allow young people to improve their lives and does so with worthwhile programs and dedicated staff members.

Sending your troubled teenager to bootcamps is not at all an easy task. As a parent you need real information and tips to help you decide whether it is the best program for you troubled teen. To get all these free articles just check out the site.
