American Idol Episode Review 2.23.2010 – Season 9 Episode 13 This week’s Idol was the first live episode as the lady’s were up first. One memorable moment was the SNL type skit featuring Simon rubbing his hand on Ellen’s leg under the table. Ryan also reported that Simon was quoted in the New York press that he expected a female contestant to win it all this year. After being subjected to amateur hour at the karaoke bar, the ladies made Simon seem like a fool with his prediction. Lilly Scott, who one year ago was living out of her car and performing on the streets of Denver, performed the Beatles song “Fixing a Hole.” Even Simon found it hard to criticize her and said it was the best of the night. As has been par for the course of the last few seasons, the first round of performers were completely forgettable and lacking star power. Siobhan Magnus, the glass blowing apprentice who didn’t know the meaning of the term dark horse turned in one of the night’s memorable performances with her rendition of the Chris Isaak hit song Wicked Game. Even if she doesn’t end up winning the competition, there’s always that glass blowing apprenticeship program to fall back on. Over all the judging was lame as usual, except for Simon. Ellen told everyone they had a great voice over and over while she seemed so nervous. Most of the time she repeated the same thing the other judges said, which showed us just how bad the show is going to be without Simon. As much as everyone likes to boo Simon, he knows what he is talking about and FOX is going to have a tough time replacing him. With all the rumors swirling about his replacement I hope the network is smart enough not to hire shock jock Howard Stern, but with a network that has churned out quality programming like When Animals Attack, My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé, and The Swan, sound judgment doesn’t seem to be an attribute. Let’s hope the guys can bring it tonight! Watch American Idol Jim N. Staff writer www.tvshowbase.com
