Nutritional Imbalances And Chronic Inflammation - Are They Related?

Health
Crisp answer is yes, nutritional imbalances and chronic inflammation are related to each other. There are many cases wherein the subject suffering from chronic inflammation like arthritis, psoriasis, etc has nutritional imbalances. Let us explore further.

Studies on nutritional imbalances and chronic inflammation have proved that omega3 and omega6 fatty acids are the two important nutrients that play a significant role in controlling the inflammation cycle in the body. Omega6 fats are found in meat, processed food, and oils like sunflower, canola, while omega3 fats are found in cold-water fish and flaxseeds. Omega-6 fats have inflammatory property, whereas omega3 fats are known for their anti-inflammatory nature.

Both these are essential fats. This means that our body needs both of them for proper growth and development but is incapable of producing them on its own. Therefore, we have to take both of them explicitly through the various components of our diet. However, because of our lifestyles, we end up eating more of omega6 and very minimal of omega3. This results in nutritional imbalances and chronic inflammation in the body.

Recommended omega6 to omega3 ratio is 4:1 but because of the eating habits, for most of us this is figure is 20:1.

Solution is to either reduce the consumption of omega-6 fats or increase the ingestion of essential omega3 fatty acids. Best and feasible approach to reduce inflammation in the body is to take omega3 fish supplements. It scores over eating flaxseeds and fish for the following reasons –

1. These supplements are rich in DHA omega3 fat unlike flaxseeds that have only ALA form of omega3 fats. Once consumed body can convert DHA to a chemical called Resolvin D2, a known anti-inflammatory agent. ALA on the other hand is used for energy and only a small portion is left for body to be converted to DHA. Moreover, this conversion process is not very efficient.

2. Unlike fish, the supplements undergo various refining techniques during their manufacturing time, so are free from toxins like mercury, lead, arsenic, etc. All these toxins may be present in fish because of increasing pollution in ocean waters.

Now that you know there exists a strong connection between nutritional imbalances and chronic inflammation, your next step should be remove the imbalances in the nutritional diet and start taking an effective omega three fish oil supplement.

A word of caution, market today has many high as well as low quality supplements. You have to be very vigilant while taking your pick. A substandard one can do more harm than good.
