Infrared Cameras - Keeping You Safe in the Nighttime

Business
If you think night vision infrared cameras are only available to the military and police, think again. Nowadays, you can buy a wide range of cameras and camcorders equipped with highly effective night vision functions.

After all, the night is the prime time for crime so when you set up a security camera system for your home or business, you need to make sure that it will capture images in low light conditions. Being able to monitor your property during the nocturnal hours is essential for your overall security. And if you’re an animal enthusiast, using an infrared wildlife camera allows you to observe nocturnal animals remotely. So how do they work their magic?

Standard security cameras usually feature 'night vision'. This is a system that uses an integrated infrared illuminator. It uses banks of infrared emitting diodes to illuminate the scene with infrared light. This light is invisible to the naked eye but allows the camera to capture images in darkness.

You can also buy illuminators separately either as models that integrate into your camera or as standalone units. The drawback of such night vision cameras is that they only capture black and white. However you can get models that also record color during the day.

Another drawback of infrared cameras is that the distance they can record is limited by the distance covered by the infrared illuminator. For greater coverage you can get a true infrared camera which uses a micro bolometer, a sensor not dependent on any light source. Instead it registers radiation from another region of the electromagnetic spectrum - body heat. They work because objects of different temperatures emit different levels of infrared energy. The sensors in infrared cameras pick up these energy differences and convert them electronically into images which can be viewed and recorded.

This ability to measure heat means that these cameras can have a host of other applications in industries in which heat levels are critical. They can function as highly sophisticated heat sensors and monitoring systems. For example, they can keep an eye on the temperature of a liquid passing through a pipe.

One of the most popular applications for spy cameras is for wildlife photography. One of the pleasures of being a wildlife buff is being able to photograph your favourite fauna in their natural habitat. By using a wildlife camera, you can take both video and still photographs and get fascinating insights into the lives of your favourite animals and a permanent record to keep and enjoy.

The problem is of course that animals can be camera shy or at least human shy. Being able to get close enough to animals to effectively photograph them can be a really difficult task. One option is to use a wildlife camera. By setting up one of these covert devices in the animal's natural habitat and then retreating to a distance, you can get stunning still and video pictures without disturbing the animals. You can view your images from a distance, record them, or both.

One good way to survey an area for wildlife activity is to use a trial camera. You leave a camera or two in locations where you think wildlife inhabit and leave them to record activity for a week or more. Just retrieve the camera and view the recording on the film, tape or media card and you'll know the habits of all the wildlife in the area. Or just set up a webcam and check in at your convenience.

In fact wildlife webcams are very popular at the moment. For example if you don't have time to head off to Africa, you can go on a remote safari viewing wildlife via a wireless IP wildlife camera positioned on the plains of the Serengeti. How’s that for convenience?

Infrared cameras can work in conditions of total absence of light. While to the naked eye the scene is in darkness, through your LCD viewfinder or on your monitor, the scene will appear as though it were daylight. Infrared cameras are essential for keeping you safe during the night hours and have many other uses besides. What's more, they're very affordable, easy to buy online, and a snap to set up and use.

Kathryn Dawson writes articles for Fly on the Wall, a specialist covert camera store that sells high quality infrared cameras and wildlife camera with night vision for animal enthusiasts. Choose one that is battery or mains powered, or go for a weatherproof infrared wildlife camera which is ideal for capturing shots of wildlife in remote areas where mains power is not practical. Browse online for a range cameras and DVR recorder systems in very competitive prices.
