Psalm 64 reads as follows from the New King James version of the Bible: 1 Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation; Preserve my life from fear of the enemy. 2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity, 3 Who sharpen their tongue like a sword, And bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words, 4 That they may shoot in secret at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear. 5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, “Who will see them?” 6 They devise iniquities: “We have perfected a shrewd scheme.” Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep. 7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they shall be wounded. 8 So He will make them stumble over their own tongue; All who see them shall flee away. 9 All men shall fear, And shall declare the work of God; For they shall wisely consider His doing. 10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory. Within this psalm David is meditation and pondering the ways of the wicked. The wicked are involved in schemes that involve cunning and the planning that goes under the surface of what can be found out. Because these schemes are cunning, shrewd and carefully crafted within the depths of thinking, they think that these schemes are also hidden. That they really are for all intents and purposes secret plots. Correspondingly David’s meditation is also secret and reaching into the depths. These depths of thinking that David is ascribing to the wicked in their hidden plots, applies to his own meditation which includes his contemplation of their actions and the depths of their plots. The mysterious under surfaces of the great oceans goes to depths that are miles on end. Who really knows what is in these depths even in terms of sea creatures and some oceanographers have stated that the undersurfaces of the oceans are more of a mystery than our knowledge of the solar system. The wicked think that the depth of their own secret thoughts is like the great unknown and to a degree they are right. They will devise iniquities out of these depths and the subsequent relation and punishment of these schemes by the wicked will be seen in the outer surface of events by others as the Lord causes them to stumble in the open terrain of all that is out there. In verse 8 it says: All men shall fear and shall declare the work of God, for they shall wisely consider his doing. What this verse is saying, that these observes, who had nothing to do with the plots, can see by the Lord’s actions and judgments that he read into the depths of these plots that were deemed to be hidden by those who were making them, hidden seemingly like the great undersurface of the seas. However the Lord read into the depths. But this is more so a secondary point to the psalm is how it might apply to us today. The major point is the David also carried into the depth as he was mediating upon the wicked as it states in very one. His own contemplations reached into the very same depths that were used for wrong by the wicked in their devices. David was also reaching into the great depths within his own meditations, just as we can do today. What this points to is the ways of meditation as a means of being before the Lord and drawing from the deep wells that is being talked about in this psalm. Meditation involves incredible means, comparable to the great depths of the ocean that are as mysterious as outer space. This mystery is within and these great depths can be drawn upon through meditation as David himself is doing to bring about these thoughts on the wicked in this psalm. The Lord sees all secrets good and bad. What can be seen and revealed in meditation may not be found elsewhere. The Lord does see and know David’s meditation even though David’s meditation is secret. The example of David here is that it is wise to consider the dealings of the Lord within the depths of meditation as the Lord reaches into the depths. The Lord may address secrets even though you may not have explicitly expressed them at any point. In many ways we may have intentionally or unintentionally skirted our own depths or we just haven’t gone there. That the Lord exposed the schemes of the wicked showed he observes that he unveiled the depths in his judgments. The good part of this is that the tools of meditation before the Lord can help us in getting ready for the future and potentially good paths that might be found and followed with the help and aid of meditation before the Lord. While doing this, it could be helpful to have a notebook and pen ready to record any insights that do rise up and then go back to the meditation within this slight interruption. While this psalm is addressing some of the ways of the wicked, it is more so about meditation itself, how it goes to great depths and how David is doing this himself within the framework of the composition of this psalm and we may have some of the same potentials to follow suit and engage in meditation before the Lord for both the good of ourselves and others as the depths of meditation can also be useful in finding out the greater ways of intercession and how the Lord may want us to intervene for others in the manner of intercessory prayer.
