The most important part of garage tool storage is figuring out what you have and deciding how you want to organize it. You might want to sit down and dedicate a Saturday (depending on how many tools you have) to figuring out what tools you have. It is a good idea to actually take a physical inventory of everything that you have. Write down each item, what you primarily use it for, and how often you use it. This will come in handy later once you begin working on how you want to organize your garage tools. This list is also great for insurance purposes. Once you have this inventory of your tools, look at the “how often you use it” section. For those that you use rarely, think about whether it is worth it or not to even have that tool. Maybe it is a leftover from a hobby that you no longer have. If that is the case, it is probably time to get rid of it. The next step is deciding how to organize your garage tool storage. Do you want to have things organized by how you use them or by the type of tool? My personal preference is organizing them by how I use them. I just find it more convenient to have the tools that I use for basic around the house projects in one place and those that I use for gardening in another place. However you decide to organize your tools, make sure that it makes sense for you and how you would look for them. Getting your garage tool storage organized takes some planning. You need to know what you have and how you want it organized before you start moving anything around or buying systems to use.
