Nurture, Inc. has recalled some of its HappyTot and HappyBaby pouch meals. A packaging defect may allow bacteria to get into the product and potentially cause illness. So far, no illnesses have been reported. No harmful bacteria have been detected in the defective packages that have been tested. The recall is voluntary and the company is offering a full refund or exchange of the product. The Problem Leading To the Recall A problem in the manufacturing process has caused a defect in the packaging that allows the packages to leak or swell. The concern is that a swollen or leaking package may contain bacteria. Nurture has tested food from some of the swollen packets and found Lactobacillus spoilage bacteria. There are many strains of Lactobacillus. The most well-known is L. acidophilus, taken to maintain gut health. Nurture says that it has been told that the strain found in its products should not cause any health problems. Identifying the Recalled Pouches The products affected by the recall are HAPPYTOT Stage 4 and HAPPYBABY Stage 1 and Stage 2, labeled with expiration dates between November 2010 and January 2011. The pouches are solid plastic and have a plastic cap. They were sold in late December, 2009 and early January, 2010. Nurture says that about 215 to 250 units were affected and that they were distributed to less than 300 retailers. The recalled pouches were sold in Target and Whole Foods stores throughout the country. What to Do If You Have the Recalled Pouches If you have HappyBaby or HappyTot products affected by the recall or if you are not sure if your product is included, but the package is swollen or leaking, do not feed it to you child or consume it yourself. You can return the recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund or contact Nurture, Inc. for a refund or replacement. If the pouch is leaking wash your hands thoroughly after handling and clean any surfaces that the leaked food may have come in contact with. Suspicious Food Packaging Anytime you have a food product in a package that is swollen or leaking, you should treat it as if it were contaminated, whether there is a current recall for the product or not. The problem should be reported to the manufacturer. Never consume a suspicious food product.
