Although cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages remain the goal of lots of travelers, airline baggage charges are driving up many passengers total cost of travel. This is particularly true in light of Spirit Airlines announcement last week that they are going to start charging customers to carry-on luggage. The following are tips for packing smarter: · Pack whatever clothes will fit in your laptop bag. Under Spirit Airline’s new carry-on policy it will continue to allow passengers to bring one personal item onboard for free that fits under a seat. · Reduce the amount of space clothes take in your bag(s) by sucking the air out of your clothes. “Speedy Space Maker” hand-pressed compression bags or vacuum freezer bags with a hand pump can do the job. Either way it only takes seconds and clothes then fit in much smaller spaces. · Consider shipping your belongings via the U.S. Postal Service, or UPS, or Federal Express. It cost about $26 to send a 25 pound bag with the dimensions of a usual carry-on from Atlanta to Miami, via Priority Mail, which arrives in two days. The price falls to $17 if you ship it 5 days before you need it. www.cheapfares.com
