People sometimes wonder if or how make up causes wrinkles. These days, it may have more to do with relying too heavily on it to protect you from the sun. The rays also cause the quick depletion of naturally occurring antioxidants, which are our only defenses against damaging free radicals. Free radical damage plays a role in cancer and is now recognized as a major cause of wrinkling, age spots, sagging and other outward signs of cellular aging. While those things could be due to a lack of antioxidants in the diet, research indicates that applying the antioxidants directly is more beneficial than consuming them. If we rely on the sunscreens in makeup to provide protection from UV rays, then we could be allowing free radical damage to occur. So, that’s how make up causes wrinkles, if we rely to heavily on the sunscreens. The best thing to do is to wear a hat, sunglasses and stay in the shade when you are outdoors. That will help to protect your face from UV. But, this is not the only factor. Another thing to consider is all of the chemicals that cosmetic companies put in their products. These chemicals may contain free radicals or cause increased free radical activity. Artificial preservatives are examples of chemicals that may cause free radical damage. Another part of how make up causes wrinkles has to do with the inflammation it can cause. Artificial preservatives and added fragrances are common allergens. Allergens cause inflammation, which is one of the other causes of cellular aging. Inflammation can eventually damage and degrade collagen fibres. You don’t have to stop wearing makeup. You just have to choose a good brand. One that contains zinc oxide is the best choice. It has the highest SPF rating and is able to filter out both UVA and UVB rays.
