I love kitten heels! I mean what kind of girl doesn't? First of all it combines the best of both worlds: the stiletto and the flat. Not to mention that the tiny little heel has such a cute, dainty and feminine look to it that I think that any woman can appreciate. So why is it that women are fully embracing this fabulous yet functional piece of footwear? Overshadowed by its more popular stiletto cousin, the kitten heel has truly taken a backseat to the ultra high, ultra glamorous high heel. But I'm here to tell you that this mini stiletto should get the respect it deserves and why you need to get a pair of these fabulous shoes.
History
When kitten heels were introduced in the late 1950's it was originally made with the purpose of providing young teenage girls with appropriate formal shoes without making them looking too sexy or provocative. Also, it gave these young women the chance to get use to wearing heels before going on to higher heeled shoes. Over the years it became popular among young women, but it wasn't until such celebrities as Audrey Hepburn popularized the shoe to the masses. And although after a while it did find its lost years during the 70's, it did regain its status by the 80's as many fashion labels added the kitten heel to their shoe collection and has been popular ever since.
Characteristics
What are the characteristics of a kitten heel shoe? Well, usually it has a thin, stiletto-like heel that is no higher than 2 inches. And despite the initial belief that there is a limited selection of styles, that is just not the case. From sandals to the classic pointed-toe, there are a variety of styles and looks that can satisfy any woman's taste.
Reasons to Wear It
One reason a woman should have kitten heels has to be for its functionality. It's comfortable short heel is a great feature for any woman that isn't accustomed to wearing high heel shoes on a daily basis or anyone that needs to wear formal and professional shoes for long periods of time. A classic style that is a great staple for any woman to have has to be the standard pump kitten heel. A great pump is a great shoe to have for any occasion. From a everyday work wear to a casual day out, I cannot emphasize more the importance and usefulness of a great pump. So when you are looking for a classic pump style, particularly a kitten heel, why not try on a pump with a pointed-toe? When searching for a shoe with a short heel, it is important to trick the eye with a shoe that gives the illusion of being taller, and the pointed-toe perfectly gives off that affect.
Also other than classic styles, there are many kitten heels that have a variety of trendy styles for those fashion mavens. From using interesting and luxurious materials like suede, to implementing interesting patterns such as leopard print and snakeskin print, there is definitely no shortage of fabulous footwear styles. One trend that I am totally loving right now is the use of cleaver details such as studs and bow and flower appliqu's to add a little pizzazz to the regular heel. So the next time you browse through the stores, check out any of these trends.
The kitten heel may have been a made for young teenage girls, but today any woman can appreciate these adorable style of shoes. And although it may not have glamour of the 5 inch heel, it is just as fabulous, and not to mention comfortable!
