Nursing in today’s time is believed to be one of the successful professions followed by a large number of women across the world. However, the case was much different in the previous times. During the previous times, nursing was simply thought to be an extra errand for women without a proper uniform. In the usual conditions, the nurses wore a simple white dress with a white apron and a cap. With the passing time, the profession also changed and earned great respect amongst all communities in the world and with this change their dressing also revolutionized. Slowly with the passing time and recognition of the profession, the tunic dresses worn by the nurses also changed based on the comfort and the new coming styles. Their simple servant like dresses changed into the well recognized stylish tunic dresses which were recognized by all people during any grieve condition. The uniform also evolved in the later days and consisted of a simple cloak and hat. This uniform could be easily changed into a smaller hat and a smart white apron. The entire nursing profession was greatly influenced by Florence Nightingale and it was her who designed the first training session for all nurses. Moreover, all the nurses attending the training were expected to wear a separate uniform in order to distinguish themselves from the other women who were never trained. During this era, the band and hat scheme was used to separate the nurses based on their ranks and training levels. The nurses were given their nurse hats only after the completion of three months training program. Hence, with the increasing experience, they were bestowed with hats categorizing them from the other nurses. These hats also had a disciplinary meaning on the basis of which the hats of the nurses were confiscated due to their misbehaviors in the hospital. The importance of having a nurse uniform was however understood only during the wars when wearing the heavy aprons proved to be a wrong decision. Wearing skirt in these situations was much more feasible and allowed free and fast movement to the nurses. Also, the sleeves of the dress worn by the nurses should either be rolled high up or be short so as to allow free movements of the hands during all medical procedures. As a result, these old nurse dresses needed to be styled properly for giving the nurses a comfortable wear along with a decent lady-like look. The new nurse tunics were hence designed only during the wars for all the nurses. The new stylish tunics hence made the profession well recognized and trendy amongst people. Also, it was then considered to be a guaranteed job for all people with great clothes and a decent recognition. The hat system amongst the nurses slowly disappeared completely by the early seventies. The male nurse uniforms looked quite similar to the doctor’s coat while on the other hand, the nurses didn’t wish to wear the uniforms and wanted to wear stylish scrubs. Hence, slowly the newly designed scrubs were designed for nurses all across the world.
