This is a documentary set in England about a daughter of a famous British playwright Andrea Dunbar and her descent into drug abuse and other fall outs that become a national story. The central character is the daughter who is of a slightly darker complexion that her 2 siblings, all three with different fathers and the mother shows a hatred for her early on with some comments and references also to her complexion. Her early weakened relationship seems to have made her more prey to the culture of drugs that is out there, although it is conjecture to say that it wouldn’t have happened anyway given how surrounding the drug culture was to her. What this documentary really depicts is the unfortunate state of affairs where young people are all around a drug culture that permeates and they might be easy prey to it especially if there are weak links at home and the lack of a strong foundation at home. However even if the strong home foundation is there, there is such a strong tide of a drug culture and an infusion into surrounding elements that it seems that once someone gets caught in that drift, it just keeps spinning and spinning like an endless record as it was for the central character in this film. Also you see how the drug use almost immediately and totally lines up with bad characters coming into the play. The film does go outward to some of the surrounding regular neighborhood people and gives a nice view of some of the local flavor. You can see the hurt this brings about as just about a full voice and hearing is given to her character, especially with the user and how even the interjection of saving graces and people that represent a way out can end up being only temporary as the troubles just linger on and on. This also shows how this culture can just about ruin everything early on for the youths that get involved in it and darken the ensuing years with a lingering dark cloud that just extends and extends. The brighter side of things, seem to get walled away from the get go of the drug use. Overall this film forms into a sad commentary and the people that are lucky enough to sidestep this still have their foibles and weaknesses, but at least they can get back on their feet from these problems as compared to someone who has made the full descent into long term drug use like the central character of this documentary.
