APPLE VALLEY, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – In a perfect world, children are born with 20 primary teeth and 32 permanent teeth. Sometimes, however, children can be born with supernumerary teeth- a condition known as hyperdontia- meaning they have teeth that exist in addition to the normal series of teeth, said Eagan and Apple Valley Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth. Multiple hyperodontia can be related to syndromes and other problems, including Fabry-Anderson syndrome, Gardner’s syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, cleidocranial dysostosis or labial palatal cleft, according to a case report on the topic. It is rare for a person to have multiple supernumerary teeth and not have some sort of syndrome. Supernumerary teeth often get in the way of the normal dentition. The most common supernumerary tooth is a mesiodens, which is a peg-like, poorly formed tooth that occurs between the two front teeth of the upper jaw. In some cases, children may have fourth or even fifth molars that develop behind the third molars as another type of supernumerary teeth, Eisenhuth said. In a survey of 2,000 children, 0.8 percent had supernumerary teeth present in their primary dentition, while 2.1 percent had them in their secondary dentition, according to a study cited in a Journal of the Canadian Dental Association article. “In some cases, supernumerary teeth can prevent permanent teeth from erupting properly,” said the Apple Valley braces provider. Early Detection Early detection of hyperdontia can lessen the severity of or even prevent future orthodontic problems, said Eisenhuth, who also is an Apple Valley Invisalign provider. “That’s another reason why it’s good to have children visit an orthodontist by age 7,” she said. “A panoramic X-ray can detect supernumerary teeth and once we know what we’re dealing with, we can create a treatment plan.” Early detection also means the supernumerary teeth can be removed at the correct age. “Taking them too early can be difficult for the child or the developing dentition, and taking them too late can harm the roots or crowns of erupting teeth,” Eisenhuth said. “It must be timed well.” Read the full article titled “Apple Valley Orthodontist Discusses Supernumerary Teeth’’.
