Every year, British holidaymakers flock to the Spanish island of Mallorca for their summer holidays and it is no wonder - the largest of all the islands in the Balearic set is famed for the brilliant mix of relaxing sun holiday and culture-tinged break that it offers visitors. During August, the whole of Spain celebrates one of the most important dates in the Catholic calendar, the Feast of Assumption. The day falls on August 15th and is said to be the day on which the Virgin Mary came to the end of her earthly life and ascended to heaven. As such, August 15th is a huge day across Spain and heading off on a Mallorca holiday around this date is sure to allow you the chance to witness how the locals like to celebrate. As the day marks the death of the Virgin Mary, many of the parades and carnivals which take place are marched to the beat of a slow drum. However, there are some more up-tempo events on offer too, and you will be sure to find something fun-filled to amuse you on this day. From traditional dancing, to band performances and singing, August 15th sees the whole of the island enveloped in song and dance, and is a great way for visitors to get under the skin of the culture. The date is a public holiday in Spain and so you might expect some of the main cities and towns of Mallorca to be busy. To try and avoid the crowds, you may choose to head out early in the morning or later on in the day, when many Spanish take a fiesta as a midday rest. As the main hub for all religious activity on the island, the statuesque cathedral in the Mallorca capital, Palma, is definitely worth a visit on a holiday here. On August 15th, there may be a number of specially-themed services which could appeal to those keen to get a full understanding of this important event. If heading to one of the services is not your thing, a visit to the cathedral should still not be missed. This impressive building dates all the way back to the 12th century and is a great example of the Gothic architecture style. The main part of the church is an amazing 121 metres long and 55 metres wide, making it a truly breathtaking sight. From the outside, the church is a beautiful structure and certainly deserves a snap or two. One of the most famous elements of Palma Cathedral is its tall bell tower, which stands at more than 50 metres high. The tower houses nine huge bells, one of which is particularly famous due to its size. This bell, called N'Eloi, is a massive two metres in diameter and weighs an intimidating 4,517 kilograms. As well as the bell tower, the cathedral boasts a number of smaller chapels which offer visitors peace and serenity, as well as the chance to quietly reflect. Like many other religious nations, there are rules which you should follow when visiting a place of worship in Spain, such as dress codes which must be followed to avoid causing offence. To make sure this does not happen, make sure shoulders are covered and shorts or skirts are below the knee. After enjoying all that the Feast of Assumption has to offer, you may fancy lying back on the beach and making the most out of being on holiday - and you will truly be spoiled for choice over where to relax on Mallorca. The island is home to a huge variety of beaches, so all you have to do is decide what kind of beach day you fancy. Some are best for those who simply want to chill, whereas water sports fans or those on a Mallorca holiday with their children may want to head to one of the livelier and busier beaches on the island. The Feast of Assumption is one of the most important dates in the Catholic calendar and those heading to a Mallorca villa can enjoy the island's festivities.
