Porto Colom - perfect for a relaxing break to Majorca

Travel & Tourism
While much of Mallorca may be well known for vibrant nightlife, fun-filled activities and water sports, many people who head off on a Majorca holiday may be after something a little bit more low-key.

And as you may expect on the island, which is the largest in the Balearic set, there are many places more suited for those who are seeking rest and relaxation on their holiday to Spain. One way of ensuring that a break to Mallorca is as restful and peaceful as possible could be to hire one of the many contemporary villas in Mallorca which are available all over the island.

If you want the chance to really kick back and unwind on your holiday, you should certainly consider looking into the type of accommodation on offer in the coastal community of Porto Colom. While the larger cities and towns of Mallorca are perfectly suited for party animals who want to dance all night and spend all day on a beach, this harbour-side village offers a more serene holiday spot.

There are many Mallorca villas available in and around Porto Colom, which can be found on the east coast of the island, and so you are sure to find one in the ideal spot for you. As the village is very much off the beaten track, you may want to consider hiring a car, particularly if you fancy heading out of Porto Colom to explore some of its surrounding communities. However, you will still find it easy to head to the village from the airport, with transfers usually taking around an hour and a half.

Somewhere you may want to visit on a day out in your hire car is the nearby golf course of Vall D'or. This 18-hole course can be found by taking the road out of Porto Colom to S'Horta, which should take you in the direction of Felanitx. This course is ideal for playing at any time of the day, even in the hours when the Spanish sun is at its warmest, as the sea breeze afforded by its coastal location keeps the temperature on the course comfortable at all times.

Its rural location offers a truly peaceful holiday spot and you will also find that the village of Porto Colom boasts many aspects of traditional Mallorca. The area's main industry comes from its fishing and a stroll down to the harbour will allow you to catch a glimpse of the workings of this industry, which has served the island for generations.

As you may expect from its location by the sea, the village of Porto Colom boasts some of the most delicious and fresh seafood that can be found anywhere on the island. It is definitely worth spending time checking out the local restaurants and finding one which offers the fish of the day fresh from the local harbour.

The island's traditional side can also be seen in the kind of houses you will see in Porto Colom. While many resorts on Mallorca are home to flats and hotels aimed at tourists, here you can see coloured stone homes situated on winding cobbled streets which are, at times, extremely narrow.

After a stroll around the area, you may fancy relaxing on the beach and much like the rest of the beautiful island of Mallorca, Porto Colom boasts a stunning sandy cove.

Those holidaying with children may want to head to this beach as it has been awarded a blue flag, which means it offers both safe swimming and high levels of cleanliness. Other activities which you can enjoy on a trip to Porto Colom include a visit to the village's chapel, the church of Sant Jaume, a beautiful building well worth seeing.

A Majorca holiday can really include as much or as little as you like and while Porto Colom may offer the very best in rural holidaying, a break here also gives you the option of taking part in something a little bit more upbeat, as other towns and cities can be easily reached. Either way, you are sure to end a holiday to the Spanish island feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

If you are looking for contemporary villas in Mallorca look no further than Mallorca Farmhouses. Search self-catered accommodation for Mallorca holidays. Those seeking relaxing Mallorca villas should head to the harbour village of Porto Colom, a peaceful spot ideal for a quiet break.
