Spirit Airlines’ claim to fame of cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages is doing nothing for its travelers at the moment since none of its planes are flying. Its pilots went on strike on Saturday, June 12th, and none of Spirit’s planes have flown since. Shortly prior to the strike’s commencement, Spirit had announced that it had worked out arrangements with pilots from other carriers who would help fly Spirit aircraft in the event of a strike. This did not come to pass. Spirit typically flies about 16,000 passengers daily. In an effort to reduce the number of customers requesting full refunds (which Spirit has said that it will honor), Spirit is offering its customer’s credit for future flights, plus a $100 flight credit. Sprit ticket holders attempting to purchase replacement tickets from other airlines or rent cars to take them to their destinations are frequently discovering that the last minute prices they are being quoted by other travel providers is far in excess of the price of their original Spirit ticket. Some customers have been suspicious of receiving anything from Spirit other than a full refund of their tickets because there is no certainty that credits for future flights will be worth anything unless this strike is resolved soon. Spirit’s pilots claims that the airline’s latest pay offer still is not comparable to the pay pilots at other discount airlines (such as JetBlue and AirTran) are earning and that they will settle for nothing less. www.cheapfares.com
