More and more people are becoming interested in how to be eco-friendly. Some things may seem difficult or overwhelming. Trying to recycle is too much for some people. But, there are many easy things you can do to help the environment. Since the easiest ones are those you are more likely to stick with, here’s a look at those. Don’t litter. If you care anything about the environment, you are probably already aware of the damage done by littering. You might never throw a paper cup out of your car window. But, you might not think twice about dumping an old soda or the rest of your morning coffee on the ground. Remember that everything you put on the ground ends up in the water supply at some point in the future. The recent news reports about drugs in tap water made many people nervous. The most common drug identified in the water samples was caffeine. Failure to use adequate filtration methods at the wastewater treatment facility is one of the reasons that caffeine ends up contaminating the water, but every little bit can hurt or help. Disposing of anything appropriately is what you can do to help. Another easy step if you want to learn how to be eco-friendly is to check the ingredients in the cleansers you use at home. Your shower gel, hand soap, dishwashing liquid or laundry detergent may contain an antibacterial agent called triclosan. Triclosan is bad for the environment and won’t really do much to protect your health either. Researchers have shown that washing with plain soap and water removes just as many germs from your hands as washing with triclosan. It is the rubbing action that removes cold and flu-causing viruses, anyway. Triclosan and other anti-bacterial agents do not kill viruses. Staying away from triclosan and other chemicals that pollute our water supplies is a big part of how to be eco-friendly. Those chemicals are not removed by wastewater treatment facilities. They get dumped in rivers, streams and lakes. According to scientists, they damage the eco-system by killing tiny species that are consumed by bigger fish and eventually people. Once a chemical gets in the food chain, it’s hard to get rid of it. Another thing that you can do to conserve water is to reduce the number of bottled beverages that you buy. Conserving water is a big part of how to be eco-friendly. The plastic bottles used by the bottling companies are a major source of pollution. Many of the big companies use the local public water supply and they waste about three times the amount of water that ends up in the bottle. Water, sodas, juices and other beverages are all problems. You can drink your own tap water if you install a purifier in your kitchen. Purifiers are affordable and efficient. I would not recommend one of the brands you find in the discount department stores, because they break too easily. I have other suggestions for how to be eco-friendly. I think the steps mentioned here are easy enough that anyone can take them.
