It all started with a single paper, a heartfelt message and the burning desire to let his or her feelings known. Part of our human nature is to feel and with that comes our need to express our feelings. Some are bold enough to say it straight verbally but for some, actually for most of us, we have setbacks in telling someone our feelings right into their faces. We are hesitant for one reason or another and hence we decided to put everything in black and white. But more often, words are not enough to describe how we feel. Sometimes we need to be a little creative and we have to draw some graphics and pictures so that we could get our feelings across. We are now made to believe that indeed a picture paints a thousand words. The necessity to combine words and beautiful graphics gave birth to cardmaking or the craft of making greeting cards. Before, we would only need a heartfelt message, a normal or even better a specialty paper and our coloring pens to come up with the best greeting card for that special someone. Cardmaking started with the ancient Chinese who intends to send their message of goodwill to their fellowmen during New Year. The Egyptians, Europeans and Germans shortly followed in this thoughtful tradition. Now, they are exchanging greeting cards not only during New Year but in almost every special occasion. Until in 1850s, when the printing technology was modernized and greeting cards became more accessible and easier to produce. But the advent of modern technology made the art of cardmaking even more complicated. Now we can exchange card virtually. Several softwares have been developed to help people create or design either their own greeting cards to be printed in their personal home printers or to come up with a high-end electronic card that comes with glittering text and animated graphics. But in reality, amid all the advancements in cardmaking, we should keep in mind the real essence of this activity. Greeting cards are meant to communicate. It is created to get our message across. No matter how expensive or flashy looking your card is, if it is devoid of touching words of support and encouragement then it is as useless. Many people could even appreciate a card that is handmade than the one bought in the stores. Cliché as it is, but really, it’s the thought that definitely counts.
