What is the importance of having healthy skin? The skin’s primary function is to protect the inside of the body from damage. It is a major part of the immune system and the largest organ of the body. Protecting and improving the skin’s health is as important as protecting all of your other bodily organs. If you neglect or abuse your skin, you are neglecting and abusing an important organ. Overexposure to the sun is one thing that damages the skin’s health on a short and possible long-term basis. Short-term damage is sunburn. The body has the ability to repair that pretty quickly. Long-term damage could include wrinkles or something as serious as cancer. Age spots, uneven pigmentation, dryness and roughness are other symptoms of overexposure to sunlight. Some skin cancers can be treated easily. Others are more serious. The most serious type is malignant melanoma. Wearing a broad spectrum sun-block whenever you expect to spend more than 10 or 15 minutes outdoors is a good idea, even on cloudy days. Doctors believe that the majority of a person’s UV exposure occurs when the sun is not shining. Another factor that has to do with the importance of having healthy skin is vitamin D production. Vitamin D is an essential antioxidant. Low levels are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and other health problems. The body needs some sunlight to produce vitamin D. Not much is present in the foods that we eat, unless the foods are fortified. To get a reasonable amount of sunlight, expose your arms and legs on a regular basis. But protect your face whenever possible in order to avoid wrinkles and other visible signs of aging. The importance of having healthy skin also has to do with the prevention of infections. There are hundreds of different kinds of bacteria present on the skin’s surface. Most of them do not cause illness. They co-exist in a natural balance and help to prevent more harmful bacteria from taking up residence. Using antibacterial soaps and rubs may throw off the balance, leading to an overgrowth of P Acnes, staph or other illness-causing pathogens. A bacterial or viral infection can easily become serious and spread throughout the body using the lymphatic system. Diabetics have a high incidence of amputations caused by minor injuries to their feet. Using a moisturizer on a regular basis is one thing they are instructed to do. Moisturized skin is less easily damaged. The importance of having healthy skin also has to do with a person’s appearance. Even if you don’t care at all about the way that you look, your appearance is something you might want to consider. How you look affects how other people treat you. If you look dirty or you have symptoms of some skin disease, people will avoid you. You might not care much about that, but everyone needs help now and then.
