I am a seventy five year old male. I weigh 188 pounds and I am six feet tall. My wife is five foot three and weighs 122 pounds. We walk about four to five miles each day. I wore out a hip and had it replaced six months ago and We play golf, kayak together and are in great shape. I quit smoking forty four years ago and began to walk with my wife every evening for four miles. At first it was to get out of the house to get my mind off of the urge to smoke. As I felt better and my lungs cleared I began to think of walking as healthy for my heart. I always walked with my wife and we always held hands. She was in better condition than I and today we still hold hands as we walk. Walking not only has kept us in great health it has kept our marriage healthy. This year, 2010 we celebrated fifty two years of married life. Two things I love to do conflict with each other. I love sweets and I love to walk. Many years ago I was tipping the scales at over 220 pounds. At that time I was forty five years old and working too hard and under stress trying my best to make a failing business to work. I literally was on a tightrope. For breakfast I would have two eggs and a big slice of bologna or two and two slices of white toast and coffee with sugar. Luckily I woke up my brain and realized that if I was going to live I had to change my eating habits. My wife and I picked up a book on healthy eating. It advised us to change to whole wheat bread, kick the bologna and replace it with cereal and eat lots of fish and chicken breasts. Over the years since then we have changed other things in our diets. The one bit of advice we give is to change things gradually. For example. One little change you can make is to eliminate sugar from your coffee. Try switching to Splenda and you will take off a few pounds in a year. It takes some getting used to but in a few months you will not even notice the taste. Never be without bananas or apples or your favorite fruit. If you do not enjoy fruit, too bad. Get over it. These will save your life. Give up red meat. If you want to live a long healthy life giving it up will help you to do it. Red meat stays in your system for days and can lead to colon cancer. It also makes you feel heavy and takes the bounce out of your step. Make these changes in your lifestyle and you too can be healthy in your later years. Dark chocolate comes from the cocoa bean and therefore is a fruit. That is one fruit I am never without.
