You have let the old body fitness thing lapse over the years and there are bulges popping up here and there where they should not be. You tune into Dr. Oz on his program and you hear all about getting healthy and all of that exercise you must do. Yes, what he and his guests say is true. Diet and exercise really go together. If you do not get a start on a health and nutrition program you are going to suffer for it in the long run. Your body will continue to gain weight and all of your organs will suffer. Not all of a sudden but over time your lifestyle will kill you. So what to do. Dieting does not work. Studies have shown that to be true. It may be because you try the entire diet all at once. That never worked for me and most people believe I am in very good condition for a man of seventy five. I am trim, play golf, walk 4 miles a day and spend time with my wife in our inflatable kayak as often as the weather will allow. So how do I do it? - My secret is to change your eating habits gradually. Whatever you have for your breakfast change it slowly until you are eating a bowl of cereal and a cup of tea or coffee without sugar. Without the sugar is the key so you might try just the coffee or tea or change to Splenda or the like. I love muffins. My wife bakes these low fat muffins made with Splenda and whole wheat. I have one with breakfast.
- Eat a fruit for a snack mid morning. For noon lunch we have a tuna or sliced ham or turkey sandwich made with whole wheat bread. Just a light swipe of mayo. A glass of water or one percent milk. Mid afternoon more fruit. Before dinner we have a fresh salad without the dressing.
- For dinner we have fish fillet, rolled in flour and dipped in egg fried in a little olive oil with frozen veggies heated in the microwave and served with brown rice. Next choice is breast of chicken sprinkled with Shake and Bake cooked in the microwave for four minutes. Serve with the same veggies and brown rice. A slice of whole wheat bread. We also have spaghetti and meatballs. One of my favorites is a breast of chicken stir fry. Serve over brown rice. In the evening we will have an apple or a pear or no fat popcorn. A slice of whole wheat bread.
- The secret to all of this is the size of the servings. For the chicken breast supper we take one chicken breast, cut in two and that is it. Not a breast each. The fruit and salad we eat before dinner fills the stomach.
This kind of diet will take the weight off but to trim your shape and get all of the organs working you need a good one hour walk every day. Not three or four times a week but every day.
