You can also learn subliminally, by playing Japanese language programs even when you aren't focused on studying. Yes, there is quite a lot to be said to learning a language directly through lessons and practice drills. You can also learn automatically, however, allowing the subconscious to take in the knowledge. So you can have your tapes or mp3 programs playing while you do other things, whether it's cleaning the house, cooking or taking a drive to the store. This is a very easy way to learn, as you don't have to do any conscious work, but it can really help. This method works without your having to do much at all, so it's almost effortless learning! Taking this a step further, you could also try having the programs play while you are asleep! There is no shortage of tricks and helpful tools to make learning a language easier.
