When drum machines first came out they changed the way song writers made demos, studios recorded percussion and made a full drum kit available to home studios for a few hundred dollars. Fast forward ahead to today and we have apps available for smart phones and tablet devices like the iPad that cost less than $10 bucks and can do everything those original drum machines could and more. What are some of those apps you can get to create beats, drum loops and more on your mobile devices? That's what we're going to look at in this article. Drum Meister This app uses a virtual kit on the screen of your iPhone or iPad. To play each drum or cymbal you simply click the screen over top of the drum you want to play. Making beats at first on an app like this feels a bit cumbersome, but the sample quality of each sound is fantastic and for simple high-hat, kick drum and snare beats it's quite easy to use. Vdrummer Similar to other drumming applications vDrummer uses actual images of piece of a full kit on screen. You tap the particular drum or cymbal you want to play and the sound is made. A difference between vDrummer and say Drum Meister is the drums are not pictured on the screen as a setup drum kit, rather they are positioned in a way that the most used drums are close to each other. This layout is much easier to use with common beats and arrangements that use the kick drum, snare drum and high hat cymbal. Korg iElectribe Unlike Drum Meister or vDrummer, iElectribe modeled after a drumming machine. You don't need to know much about actually playing the drums with this device since you can easily program the beats you need and then play them back. This app best resembles a drum machine from companies like Boss and Roland most people would be familiar with. One big draw back is currently you cannot save or export the beats you mix which means you must re-create them everytime you need them or record them to an external device such as a laptop with sequencing software installed on it. These are just a few of the many drumming applications that are available for devices like the iPhone, iPad and other mobile devices. Of course to make the most of these devices you should have a little knowledge about how to play the drums, make beats and fit all the pieces of a kit together to make things sound great.
