Skateboarding is a lot of fun. Skateboarding used to be some off-beat thing only young people did. But now it's a legitimate, recognized sport complete with endorsements and business participation. You can be a professional, earning a great living at it like Tony Hawk. The good news is that anybody can learn to skateboard. There is some bad news because it'll take a whole lot of time to become a pro skater. It will require tons of hard work and sacrifice, but if you have the desire - then you can read some great tips to get you started. It's smart to use the right skating gear. At first, you may feel a little bit uncomfortable wearing shin guards, helmut, knee pads and elbow pads. However, if you're really new to the sport, very quickly you'll be happy for wearing that gear. Just like riding a bike, you are going to fall off more than you are going to go forward--especially if you've never tried to skateboard before. Learning how to stop yourself will be the one thing that may produce more bruises and scrapes for you. Eventually, you'll probably stop wearing so much safety gear - but the helmut is really a good idea to keep wearing. You'll really want to protect your head in case anything happens and you fall. A good beginner board will be inexpensive and can take a good beating. Really good and really fancy skateboards are incredibly expensive. They cost so much you might be afraid to get them dirty or scuffed. So that's exactly why you'll want a starter board. They're usually thicker and have stronger wheels. Look, nothing fancy here. But they'll take a good beating that the beginner will give them. A board that's made more for new skaters is the ABEC skateboard. Stopping, however, is a little different. In the beginning, it might be better to just drag a foot to slow down. But you can practice doing the opposite of pushing-off, take smallish steps to decrease speed. You'll be taking a small step toward the opposite direction of travel. It's a bit hard on the feet, but it works. When you're better, you can stop yourself quite smoothly by dragging the tail-end of the board. However: avoid tail grinding if you're moving fast! There's much more to skateboarding than simply riding on a flat board. Believe it or not, skateboards are a legitimate way to travel and they provide you with hours of entertainment.
