It's true. Skateboarding is fun! Skateboarding used to be some off-beat thing only young people did. But now it's a legitimate, recognized sport complete with endorsements and business participation. If you're good enough, you can make good money at it - just ask Tony Hawk. But anybody can learn to do it - so that's cool! But - it takes years of practice if you want to be a pro skater, so that's some bad news. Make no mistake, being a pro takes a lot of work and dedication. But there's nothing stopping you, so here are some pointers to get you going. You may find it taking just a little bit of time to decide which foot is best in front and in back. Forget about if you're right or left-handed. Doesn't matter like batting in baseball. You have to figure out which leg is your dominant leg. So try and visualize how you go about approaching things. Which foot do you naturally use when you kick a ball? With which foot do you usually start walking up a staircase? If you begin to lose balance, which leg do you use to save your balance with? The foot you use for all of these things will almost always be the foot that you keep on the back part of the board. The important thing is you'll use your stronger leg, and it doesn't have anything to do with direction you prefer to be looking. Don't worry about going slow. Many newbie skateboarders often try to execute the tricks before they're ready. This is only good for feeling discouraged and irritated and to be injured. Being able to skate down the street without falling doesn't mean you have the right skills to execute tricks. Hopping with your board is a lot harder than you think. Start out slow and steady, then start doing longer distances. Learn how to quickly start and gain speed and then stop smoothly without falling down. When you get to the point where you can smoothly skate around the streets for a distance and move around people walking around, then that would be a good time to think about tricks. Learn the skaters jargon, and also learn the different kinds of skateboards. You'll find a wide variety of skateboards on the market. You'll want to find out why there are so many different designs. Know what other boarders are talking about when they use certain words. Then you'll be able to ask for help if you need it and be able to understand it. Just about any person can learn how to ride a skateboard. You can do anything on a skateboard, if you're willing to practice and learn the right way. Having patience is really it - see you there!
