Dental hygiene (in Danish the term is Mundhygiejne) has certainly gone a long way from what it was in the early 1900s – thanks to mouth rinse. When the toothbrush was invented, it opened up a whole new avenue in caring for the teeth. Things got even better with the introduction of the mouth rinse. The Purpose of Mouth Rinse The purpose of mouth wash is pretty easy to comprehend – it was designed for people on the go (people who did not have time to thoroughly brush their teeth as the dentist recommends) and to have a convenient way of keeping their breath fresh at any given time. Mouth rinse became a highly appreciated method of cleaning one’s mouth. It is made up of mouth-safe cleaning liquids and natural tastes that are usually within the peppermint-eucalyptus range of scents. Upon research and surveys, it was revealed that minty fresh breath was the most preferred scent for the oral region compared to other scents such as fruity and floral ones. Mouth rinse is also not just to refresh the breath; it is designed to clean the mouth almost as well as a toothbrush (Tandbørste) can. The word ‘almost’ had to be included, because nothing beats a good old scrubbing and brushing with a toothbrush. For one, mouth rinse cannot get in between teeth to really get out those food particles. The amount of cleaning it can do depends on two things: the force with which you can gargle and swish it around your mouth, and the strength of the mouth wash itself. Nevertheless, it is great to use as a quickie solution for a clean mouth and a fresh breath. That Tingly, Minty Feeling The best part about mouth rinse is that tingly and minty feeling you get. Mouth wash with stronger formulations may sting a bit in the mouth area when you gargle (especially if you have any cuts or wounds in your mouth), but trust that it is doing its job of acting as an antiseptic to keep your mouth free from bacteria and germs that could lead to cavities and other gum-related problems. The minty feeling, on the other hand, can actually do more than leave you with fresh breath. In many cases, people have found themselves feeling more alert, awake and energized just after they have gargled and swirled mouth wash in their mouths. The minty feeling and scent affects the olfactory senses in a positive manner, which is a good secondary effect of using mouth rinse. Not for Everyone and Not All the Time Of course, not everyone can use mouth wash. Children ought to avoid using it because the strong formula could hurt their still-developing mouth. Likewise, people who have sensitive teeth such as senior citizens might feel like it does more harm than good. Also, mouth wash is best when it works with regular tooth brushing. If you keep swishing mouth wash all the time, you can actually neglect key areas of your dental region that can only be effectively cleaned with the use of regular tooth brushing and flossing. Nevertheless, in a tight bind you can always count on mouth rinse to give you that clean-teeth feeling you need.To read more about dental care click here.
