Vitamins are essential to keep you healthy. They improve the immune system and the functioning of body organs. Vitaminsare used by your cells to carry out the biochemical reactions that are required to keep your body healthy. Nature’s way of fulfilling vitamin requirement is through the diet you take. However, in today’s fast paced world we hardly get any time to consider the nutritional values of the food we eat. This is where vitamin supplements come into picture.

Most vitamins cannot be produced within the body, and hence they are to be taken from the food we eat or from vitamin supplements. Taking vitamin supplements with a good diet greatly reduces your chance of any physical ailment that may arise due to the deficiency of vitamins. Vitamins are extremely important for people performing physical activities and expecting mothers. They also play a significant role in preventing health issues such as vision disorders, hair loss, beriberi, pellagra, scurvy and rickets.

Many people think that if they are feeling alright everything inside their body is working fine. This is not the case in a lot of cases. If ignored, the deficiency keeps increasing and by the time it starts to show up on the body the person is already suffering from ailments caused due to deficiency of vitamins. Special care should be taken to ensure that you take the required quantity of vitamins through your daily diet and vitamin supplements.

Even though vitamins are nature’s way of giving strength to the body, excessive intake of vitamins may work against your wellbeing. Though overdose of vitamins can’t occur from dietary sources, it is quite likely to happen if you exceed the recommended dose of your vitamin supplement. Overdose of some vitamins cause health problems such as weariness, anxiety, lethargy, poor digestive system, loss in appetite, vomiting, joint pain, petulance, headache, drying and cracking of the lips and skin, hair loss, and yellowing of the skin.

If you are planning to start taking vitamin supplements, it is always advisable to consult a physician first. Vitamin requirements of a human body depend on a number of factors such as age, weight, height, gender, medical history, etc. Taking an expert dietitian’s advice will give you a clear picture of the quantity of vitamins required by your body.
