Prime Minister David Cameron has urged British tourists to stay at home for their holidays and help recover the nation’s struggling economy. Mr Cameron claimed that Britain has been “underselling” its tourism credentials for too long, and that if Britain is to achieve his aim to be “in the top five destinations in the world”, then that improvement needs to start at home. The Prime Minister said: “At the moment, 36 per cent of what Brits spend on holidays is spent at home. Can we up our game and raise that to 50 per cent?” He also encouraged the British public to embrace their national heritage and take more pride in their landscape. Questioning why Britain lagged behind Ireland in national beauty rankings, Cameron argued: “It’s a question of perception. And the truth is we’ve just not been working hard enough to celebrate our country at home.” James Berresford, chief executive of VisitEngland, said: “We are delighted the Prime Minister has identified the importance of tourism to this country. Tourism is a hugely important economic driver and is one of few sectors that, if properly supported, can offer real growth potential.” The “staycation” trend is one that has risen in popularity in the last few years, due to the economic downturn and the recent volcanic ash cloud that grounded flights all over Europe.
