Promotional pens, for many years, have been printed by screen and pad printing processes but in the ever-demanding world of the promotions industry, suppliers have strived to create better products and services at lower costs to fulfil the demands of consumers. Printed pens are largely regarded as the most cost effective way of promoting your business, as 'everybody needs a pen'. Full colour printing is quickly turning into the 'must-have' on promotional products but has been a challenging task on promotional pens due to its cylindrical shape. With advances in technology and groundbreaking bespoke processes this challenge is now less of a problem than ever before.

Screen-printing on promotional pens requires separate screens for each colour design and this is time-consuming and expensive when dealing with multiple prints and the mixing of inks. Full colour printing using transfers simply requires one set up and colour matching is taken care of by the process itself. Intricate artwork using the screen-printing process, however, can be difficult and expensive at times, as screen printers require a high level of experience. Transfer printing requires less skill.

Screen-printing only allows single spot colours to be applied whereas full colour printing enables you to have a photographic image placed onto the barrels of the personalised pens, further enhancing your corporate logo or image. Difficult half tone images can also be achieved which is too expensive and difficult to be produced through conventional screen-printing.

Full colour printing allows for small print runs on the pen due to its single set up, which can be very expensive when screen-printing multi coloured jobs. For example, a cheap promotional pen requiring a four-colour print would incur an origination charge of four screens with all their associated costs. As the full colour process would only consist of one set up charge, it would be far more viable to go down this route.

The latest transfer technology in full colour printing now allows the pen to be any colour. In the past, a pen simply had to be white. This new technology allows the scope of promotional pens to be extended because of the marketing choices that full colour printing provides on any colour promotional pens or corporate pens.

Another significant improvement to the full-colour process is the speed of printing. Screen printing has always been the number one choice for large quantity runs but new developments in full-colour printing has allowed for larger quantities of pens to be printed on promotional pens at the same throughput as screen-printing.

Full colour printing is by far the most eye-catching way to market your promotional item and business and can now be achieved on quantities as low as 250 units.
