The F-150 is by far the most popular variant in Ford’s legendary F-Series. Introduced in 1975, the Ford F-150 has continued to be one of America’s most popular trucks while also continuing to provide bar-setting innovation. Now in its twelfth vehicle generation, industry experts don’t expect much to change with the arrival of the 2010 Ford F-150. This is a truck beloved by the consumers, but more than that, the critics universally praise it as well. A great deal of that praise starts with the 2010 F-150 engine lineup, which is a slight tweak to the all-new F-150 engine lineup that Ford introduced for the 2009 model year. The V6 engines are gone, and in their place are three primary V8 choices. 4.6 L V8 F-150 Engine (2 versions) The base 4.6 L 2-valve F-150 engine generates 248 horsepower at 4750 rpm and 293 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. Tests have placed this engine’s zero to 60 mph performance at approximately 8.5 seconds. In addition to the base engine, there is a 3-valve high output version, a 4.6 L 3V F-150 engine, available that provides 292 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 320 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. Ford pairs the base F-150 engine with a 4-speed automatic transmission while they mate the high output F-150 engine to the highly fuel efficient 6-speed automatic. 5.4 L 3V V8 F-150 Engine (2 versions) The 5.4 L 3V F-150 engine is the standard engine that Ford includes with the F-150 SVT Raptor, a dedicated off-roader, and like the high output 4.6 L, Ford mates it to the 6-speed automatic transmission. The base 5.4 L 3V V8 generates 310 horsepower at 5000 rpm, and it provides 365 pound-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. Like the 4.6 L, there is also a high output variant, and this one produces 320 horsepower at 5000 rpm along with 390 pound-feet at 3500 rpm. Consumers can purchase either 5.4 L F-150 engine as an upgrade in the standard Ford F-150. 6.2 L V8 F-150 Engine If you are the Tim the Tool Man-type seeking “More Power!”, then the potent 6.2 L Boss engine may be right up your alley. Paired with the 6-speed automatic transmission, this heralded F-150 SVT Raptor engine upgrade will be available publically sometime later in the 2010 model year. This beauteous monster roars out a chest-thumping 411 horsepower, and it supplies 400-pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing capacity on a Raptor with this bad boy will be 11,300 pounds. Although we won’t know for sure until its release, the early word from Ford is that the 6.2 L Boss will be available in the SVT Raptor only, and not as an upgrade in the standard F-150. There’s been no word if there will be exceptions, such as for the Harley Davidson model or perhaps the Platinum Series. While the 2-valve 4.6 L F-150 engine is a little light on the performance side relative to the competition, it comes at a great price, and is the perfect solution for the F-150 owner who uses the truck to get to work, and perhaps for light duty. About: The step up to the high output 4.6 L F-150 engine will probably be worth it for the weekend warriors. There’s not a lot of need for the larger engines unless you’re stepping up to the Raptor, but when one buys an engine such as that, it usually has very little to do with need.
