Twice a year – in February and September – one of the fashion industry's most prestigious events take place in New York City. The event, appropriately called New York Fashion Week, invites thousands of designers and high profile names in the industry to convene and unveil upcoming fashions and designer lines. However, this year's New York Fashion Week stood out from every other one that had been held before it.– the reason being that for the first time ever, the famed fashion event hosted a show dedicated solely to plus size clothes.
The news instantly made headlines across the globe – and fittingly so. After all, New York is a world-class fashion hub, and any major events that take place at New York Fashion Week are likely to influence the industry on a worldwide scale. The reaction from big industry players was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the move. Countless others observed that the inclusion of a plus size show was long overdue, given the number of people who fit into the plus size category – both in the United States and all across the world. After news emerged regarding the show, everyone from designers to members of the plus sized public expressed confidence that this was the beginning of a much-needed shift in the world of plus size fashion.
Of course, aside from the excitement regarding the inclusion of the show, everyone has been all ears regarding the upcoming season's plus size fashion trends. Wide-legged trousers in dark denim and tweed were seen all over the runway, as were heavy heels, knee-high boots crafted with thick leather, and peep toe pumps. With regard to prints and colours, nude proved to be popular in the plus size world. Dashikis, vibrant tribal and animal prints, geometric and graphic prints, and block prints could also be seen everywhere. However, the tribal and animal prints were served up only in moderation – for instance, on belts, tunics and shrugs, rather than via fabric-heavy dresses and coats.
