To make laundry soap at home, you will primarily need 5 pounds of melted fat in a large stainless or enameled pot. Rendered beef fat works the best. It is preferable to use an old canning kettle as you will need lots of extra stirring space. Mix 7 cups of water with 1-13 oz. can of lye and heat. When both the fat and the lye water's temperatures get to between 95 and 100 degrees, pour the lye water slowly into the fat. Stir well and add 1 cup each of household bleach and borax. Stir this mixture well too. If you do not want the bugs to move into your clothes while hung out for drying, add 2 tablespoons of citronella oil along with borax and bleach. Citronella oil leaves a light and lemony smell on your clothes. You could add any of your favourite essential oil for that matter. Lavender oil too has a pleasant spring like scent. When the mixture starts to crumble, continue to stir occasionally for several hours. Leave this mixture overnight. Over the next several days, mash and break up the chunks into pieces. When it all starts to look like a small curd cottage cheese you are ready to dry it. Spread the laundry soap in a thin layer on wax lined cookie sheets to dry. Depending on the weather conditions of your area, this can take upto 5 days, or sometimes 2 weeks. After your laundry soap is completely dried, it will need to be made into flakes for automatic washers. To do this, you can run it through a food processor or use a hand cranked meat grinder. Hand cranked meat grinder would be the best tool to use for it will not wear out your kitchen tools. Then take this ground up laundry soap and rub it through an old screen to regrind anything that does not go through. You could also save the larger chunks for hot water washing. If you would like to wash in cold water, the laundry soap should be rubbed through a screen as this makes it easier to dissolve. As this is a pure soap not a detergent, you will not see a lot of bubbles unless you use soft water. Use about 1/3 to 1/2 cup to a wash load, depending on the extent of dirt on the laundry and the water holding capacity of the machine itself.
