Facial cleanser is something you will find in practically everyone woman’s bathroom. Some men just use the soap they use on the rest of their bodies. A recent study showed that on a daily basis women use 3-6 times as many products on their skin as men. The more products you use, the more careful you have to be about what they contain. The safety of cosmetics, which according to the FDA includes products used for cleansing or beautifying, but not necessarily soap, has to do with the inclusion of toxic ingredients in very small amounts. That’s how companies have been able to include toxins for years, without being harassed by the government. They claim the toxin is present at such low amounts; it cannot possibly cause a health problem. That might be true, but what if a person used 3-18 different products per day and all of them contain that same toxin? That could be an entirely different health story. Most people tend to stick with the same manufacturer, buying an assortment of products designed for different purposes, such as cleansing, moisturizing, exfoliating, toning and covering up imperfections. Although the active ingredients in the facial cleanser and the other products will obviously vary, the artificial preservatives, fragrance ingredients and colorings are likely to be the same. Most of those are known toxins, irritants or allergens. Toxins build up in the tissues and organs of our bodies creating a burden on the liver and kidneys, as well as the immune system. Ingredients that have been used successfully for years can become irritating, because of increased sensitivities. Varying the brand that you use could help. Or you could simply choose a facial cleanser that does not contain allergens, irritants or toxins. The number of available naturally safe skincare products has increased in recent years as people have started to understand the importance of their skin’s health. It’s not just the appearance that matters. It is what’s going on beneath the surface. Molecules that contribute to inflammation or free radical damage are responsible for wrinkles and other visible signs of aging. It might not be possible to avoid all wrinkles, just as it is not possible to avoid all of the toxins in our environment. We have to breathe. It is possible to use caution when purchasing a facial cleanser or other skincare product. To start with, look for a signer of the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. The major manufacturers decided not to participate, but hundreds of small companies are dedicated to provide safe and effective products. They think about our health and not just their profits.
