The television show “Deadliest Catch” is a documentary series that follows the life of commercial fishermen throughout the Alaskan King crab fishing seasons in the Bering Sea. The base of their operations is located in Unalaska, Alaska at the port of Dutch Harbor. The show serves to outline how dangerous this sort of work environment is. The series follows five fishing vessels during two popular crab fishing seasons during the months of January and October all the while emphasizing the extreme danger that the crew of these ships face when on deck as they struggle with heavy equipment, crabs, uneven surfaces, ice, winds and waves that can sweep a man off the boat at any given moment. It also illustrates how in an environment like this, the smallest difficulties can become rather complicated when land is hundreds of miles away. Every episode centers around a situation that is happening on a few of the boats as sub-stories are portrayed surrounding the crew members otherwise referred to as “greenhorns”. More prominently featured are the captains of the vessels as a close look is taken at their relationships with other captains, their crew and the fierce competition that takes place within their risky industry. Some themes that are rather commonly suggested in the overall storyline of each fishing season are of the bond between the crew and captains as well as the familial aspects on the boats as pairs of brothers, fathers and sons all happen to work in the same industry and sometimes on the same ships. Similarly it also reminds us that these men have families on shore and highlights many of the stresses of being away as well as being immersed in such a hazardous environment. Many of newer crew members burn out rather quickly as the job is extremely taxing on every aspect of their lives. Since fishing for Alaskan crab happens to be one of the most risky occupations in the world, the rescue squads of the U.S. Coast Guard are located in Kodiak, Alaska with their outpost being on St. Paul Island are often followed rescuing anglers that have found themselves in life or death situations at the hands of the Bering Sea. The Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2006 reported that the occupations of commercial fishing as having the highest fatality rate at 75% higher than that of flight engineers, loggers, pilots and other risky occupations. Most of the fatalities are a result of drowning or hypothermia.
