Neuro-audiologists and speech-language pathologists refer to the present listening process eg: "central hearing operate" (as opposed to peripheral hearing); "auditory perception"; "brain listening function"; and the current professional description of choice, "central auditory processing disorder (CAPD)". So the upshot of the teacher's conundrum is that she created the proper referral, however sadly future lecturers in colleges of education are rarely taught that a customary audiometric "hearing check" solely provides information concerning the integrity of the peripheral hearing mechanism. (The confusion isn't the teacher's fault!) It provides zero information regarding how well the central mechanism of hearing - in the brain - is performing, while trying to decode and perceive the advanced incoming verbal message. So what does all of this have to do with Lexie and variant schoolchildren like her? This is often where the confusion and instructional calamity begins. Since Lexie "passed" the hearing check, the common assumption among lecturers and a few specialists, is that Lexie has no hearing problem. The tragedy is that youngsters like Lexie are passed-over for correct central hearing testing and auditory intervention and become part of the millions of children worldwide who struggle in remedial school settings without vital improvement, as a result of they are not given the crucial "central auditory talents" that build up brain listening function. Without these auditory receptive-language skills it is nearly impossible for these children to develop traditional speech-language, reading and writing skills. It is unhappy to work out this happen when it will be avoided. Research on kids like Lexie has found them to be inside traditional IQ vary and often place at the higher finish of the range...they are not mentally handicapped! They come from families in the middle and upper middle class of social-economic strata, yet they're typically labeled and stigmatized as "dummies" because they have speech problems and difficulties learning to browse and write. Hopefully someday soon, schools of education will examine this drawback seriously.
