A lot of people know exactly what they're looking for when they decide to get themselves a cat. Whether you've seen a favored breed at a friend or acquaintances house, or your interest was sparked by seeing a lovely feline on TV: It can be tough choosing between truly domestic cat breeds and the many wildcat hybrids that have been popping up since the 1960's. Domesticated cat breeds such as the Abysinnian, Aegean, Birman, Calico, Burmese, Chartreaux and Siamese are all household names and any of these cats will provide a loving companion for each member of your household. Each breed of cat brings with it a unique set of personality traits and level of intelligence with it. Some people prefer cats like the Abysinnian or Chartreaux since they're known to work for the affection of their owners -- still others will prefer the quiet blissful grace and intelligence of the Siamese or Burmese. Wild Hybrid cats are a mix of domestic cat breeds and wildcats. The Bengal for instance is a mix of the wild Asian Leopard Cat and a friendly domesticated Tabby. There are many crossbreed, hybrid mixes that are sure to please. The only drawback when considering such a cat is to make sure they are at least a 3rd generation hybrid, to ensure they are a few generations removed from their wild root. After 4 generations a cross-bred animal is in fact considered "domesticated." Just make sure to do your research before making a purchase, to ensure the cat will be a proper fit for you and your family. If you have a large family, you'll likely want a cat that's known for being friendly and patient around people: Whereas if you have a one or two person household, you may prefer a cat who likes to find a quiet place to relax on its own, then comes out once in a while for food and affection.
