The fancy tail goldfish, or "Fantail" is a product of Japan and easily recognized for it's tail. The tail is split in the middle with two equal halves on the top and bottom and a split anal fin. They also have a unique head shoulder connection that lacks the hump many regular goldfish have. The Fantail also possesses a metallic shine on it's scales which make it gleam in the light. Proper Care is a Must The fancy tail goldfish is a tropical exotic and needs special care to thrive. Special care means the fish needs the water to be cleaned weekly, a water temp between 60 - 70°F and a good quality fish food to keep them healthy. Longer aquarium settings will let them live longer, as opposed to goldfish bowls, which lack the necessary surface area the fish needs to thrive and get the oxygen they need. Some other ways to help your fancy tail goldfish survive are to place some live plants in the water for extra oxygen, make sure you have top-notch filtration, and to make sure you treat the tank for parasites every so often. Goldfish are among the most dirty fish, even for their size, so you will find the tank gets cloudy fairly quickly making filtration and cleaning a must (remember the less water changes you make the more filters you'll go through). Find the Experts Try to buy your goldfish from a tropical fish store, rather than a big box retailer. A store that specializes in fish will have the knowledge to get you started, be able to tell you how to prevent and diagnose problems and will more than likely have a better source for their fish. The fry stock (parents) of the fish will determine how healthy they will be through the course of their life. Find out more on fancy tail goldfish and read many interesting articles on pet health.
