A night face cream can rejuvenate, nourish and restore as long as it contains the right ingredients. One of the most popular creams contains ingredients that are all wrong. I won’t mention any company names here, because it’s not fair to single out any particular company. Nearly all of the major cosmetic companies use similar ingredients. Besides, if I mentioned a particular brand name, you might think that other brands are okay. What I want my readers to do is to become accustomed to reading the label of ingredients and learning about the compounds you see listed there. It is impossible for me to evaluate each and every product on the market. So, I want to teach my readers how to do the evaluations themselves. Here are some ingredients to avoid: • DMDM Hydantoin—an allergen an irritant, may combine with other ingredients to create formaldehyde, a known carcinogen • EDTA—toxic to the central nervous system, the kidneys and liver, known to be a skin and eye irritant • Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate—an emerging artificial preservative said to be safer and less irritating than parabens. The fumes from the ingredient are toxic when inhaled. Night face creams should not contain added fragrances, because they are the most common causes of allergic reactions. Fragrance ingredients interact with the central nervous system. They can cause mood swings and/or depression. Here are some ingredients to look for: • Active manuka honey—a mono-floral honey with the highest level of antibacterial and antioxidant activity, will help to heal blemishes and prevent new ones from forming • Shea butter—a natural moisturizer derived from the nuts of the Shea tree, helps to reduce scars and fade brown spots • Avocado oil—one of the most nourishing plant oils, it has been shown to stimulate collagen production, which will improve the skin’s firmness and smoothness Some night face creams contain all three of those, as well as other nourishing compounds. Antioxidants like coenzyme Q10 can penetrate deeply to prevent and reverse free radical damage, as long as the molecules are reduced in size. Active proteins like Functional Keratin can stimulate the growth of new skin cells. Studies have shown that creams containing the active protein can improve the skin’s firmness by as much as 40% after only 18 days of use. Will you see a visible difference after the very first night? If your facial skin is currently dry, the answer is “yes”. People with big problems see the best results. If your skin is already perfect, a good night face cream might not make a visible difference. But, if it contains the right ingredients, you can be confident that it will help you keep your beauty as the years go by.
