Food intolerance refers to intolerance to certain type of food. It is also called as non-allergic food hypersensitivity in which a particular individual is hyper-sensitive (hyper= over/ more) to some food type. It is the inability to properly digest or fully process certain foods. There are varied physiological responses of the body associated to this hypersensitivity to foods items or some compounds found in them. As a result of all this there is a severe damage to the intestine which in turn leads to chronic symptoms and also illness. Therefore it should be taken care of. It is different from food allergy. Food intolerances can be caused due to many reasons and may follow different mechanism. They are classified based on their mechanisms into 4 major types: - Fructose Intolerance - Gluten intolerance - Dairy sensitivity - Yeast sensitivity Other than these 4 major types there are also other hyper-sensitivities that are less common and may be developed to food types like corn, soy, nightshade vegetables and food additives etc. Wheat intolerance (Sensitivity to wheat) is also one such common trigger for symptoms. Enzymes are very essential in facilitating various metabolic reactions of the body (both the anabolic and catabolic types). The anabolic type reactions build the body (through building of the molecules and polymers) whereas the catabolic reactions are a break-down process (they break down the synthesized molecules mostly to generate energy). Fructose is a 6-carbon sugar (similar to glucose monomer) break down or combustion of which the body will generate energy. Fructose Intolerance is a type of food intolerance that occurs in individuals and patients due to absence of specific chemicals or enzymes that are needed to digest a food substance (either containing fructose or giving fructose as a product of metabolism). It may have occurred as a result body's inability to absorb nutrients (called mal-absorption). Food in our body goes through ingestion followed by the digestion, assimilation and excretion. It undergoes a lot of chemical reactions during this and either breaks down to small subunits or basic biological entities. Digestion in particular may cause the release of a lot of chemical constituents that are contained in the food item, right from elements in the basic form (Iodine, Potassium) to compounds which are called bio molecules. There are certain types of Food intolerance reactions that can occur due to naturally occurring chemicals in foods. One such example is sensitivity to salicylate. They are mostly found in the food coming from the plant sources and also due to certain drugs like asprin etc. Intolerance of any type, once discovered, should be always reported to the physician. They might cause minor pain and troubles but many a times as in several acute cases, they might be fatal. Withdrawal of certain foods is a common method adopted during the treatment. This is called as elimination diet. It is also easy to follow it as the physician would make a list of food items to be avoided. The best part of it being that it is a drug-free process to improve the health. There are various food intolerance infections. Food intolerance test should be carried out regularly.
