Many trekkers seek to hire a Peru Tour Operator to help them complete an Inca Trail trek, a common way to experience Machu Picchu. While the most common way to get to the Mountain City is by train, others will choose a hike on the Andean Inca Trail. People choose this means of reaching Machu Picchu because it offers a more immersive travel experience, and the slower place allows them to more fully absorb the mystery and spirituality of this ancient site. It generally takes about four days to complete one of these treks, and you will need to hire a Peru tour operator to conduct your journey. Choosing a company to tour with requires some careful thought. I can’t specifically recommend any single tour operator, but I would like to offer a few suggestions to consider as you make your choice. First and foremost, it is important that you choose a licensed operator. A great many companies will try to sell you their services, but they do not all have a license from the Peruvian government to operate on the Inca Trail. I also strongly suggest that you use caution when seeking a bargain. Be careful if you find tours offered for prices under US $450. Most likely, any Peru tour operator offering a price this low is cutting corners in one way or another. Most often, you’ll find that operators conducting these low-cost treks break one or several laws – either undercutting minimum wage regulations, or forcing their employees to carry cargo loads in excess of legal maximums. It’s important to ask yourself whether you want to trust your Machu Picchu experience to a company that would behave in this way. Finally, be sure to book with your Peru tour operator well in advance. Access to the Inca Trail is limited on a daily basis, and permits are known to sell out several months in advance. Specifically, be wary of the busy season of May-September. If you plan to travel during these months, you would be well-advised to book your trip at least five months ahead of time. Also bear in mind during your planning, you are preparing for an unforgettable visit to a mysterious, wonderful, spiritual ancient site. Make sure all the arrangements are taken care of in advance, so once you begin your trek you can focus on the experience.
