1. The Mona Lisa An important primary reason for swathes of people waiting in line for tickets to the Louvre and is housed within a private room to control the amount of mystified faces and herded feet. Smaller in the flesh than it is belived to be but still one of the most intruiging faces ever painted on canvas, the woman behind the Mona Lisa still mystifies, her knowing smile politely aimed at those who come to see her. 2. Winged Victory Painstakingly reconstructed after being unearthed in 1863 the statue is an acknowledgement of the respect the French hold for the antiquities housed within the Louvre. The statue has undergone an incredible overhaul and still provides sculpture experts with a dilemma to solve as pieces of the arms and fingers were unearthed during the 20th century. A representation of the goddess Nike the statue ensured victory for the brave sailors of the time. 3. Venus de Milo A perfect work worth a visit in the city of love this embodiment of Venus, the Roman goddess of love (or Aphrodite to the Greeks) was made around 100BC. Even though she is today armless the statue is one of the most famous examples of Hellenistic sculpture, and is without question more captivating in reality than in photographs or drawings, as with all goddesses.Worth the Louvre tickets alone. 4. Liberty Leading the People Understand the people of Paris and France through this painting alone. One of Delacroix’s most discussed works the image has become a symbol of the freedom of the French nation and their fight for liberté, egalité and fraternité. Created in 1830 after the July Revolution the painting shows hope for the future as Marianne leads the masses as well as containing many images of the still-recent French Revolution. 5. The building itself The most exciting part of any Louvre visit according to some as the traditional palace is coupled with the inverted pyramid designed and built in the 1980s. With the potential for being a crime against the Louvre palace the glass shape has transformed the entire area into a unique and fascinating attraction.
