Many companies and salespersons are touting the alkaline water benefits. The claims they make are at best misleading and at worst, downright dishonest. Life cannot exist without water. This is why scientists search for it on other planets. As far as we know, the only way there could be extra-terrestrial life is if H2O is present. All naturally occurring supplies, whether a lake, an ocean or groundwater, contain some dissolved minerals. This is because of the minerals in the rocks and soil. Rainwater contains a variety of impurities, because of the pollution in the air and clouds. Soil serves as a filtering mechanism to remove those impurities. You could however drink rainwater without experiencing any health problems, although it does have a more acidic pH level. According to the claims made by companies selling ionizers or alkaline water systems, the benefits are due to the more alkaline pH level. Yet, none of them make any statement about what the pH level is. All naturally occurring sources have a pH level ranging between 6.5 and 8.5, depending primarily on the presence of dissolved minerals. Distillation devices remove minerals and have the ability to reduce the pH to around 5.0, which is acidic. But, the reduction is only temporary. Once the liquid is exposed to carbon dioxide from the air, the pH level becomes neutral or 7.0. This is why we say that “pure” waters have a neutral pH of 7.0. Supposedly, the alkaline water benefits are due to reducing acid in the body. This is impossible according to chemists. The alkalinity of any beverage consumed would quickly be neutralized by stomach acid. When stomach contents and acid enter the intestines, the acid is neutralized by the alkalinity of pancreatic secretions. Eventually, the pancreatic secretions, along with dietary enzymes, create an alkaline environment within the intestines. Other claims about the alkaline water benefits have to do with a purported antioxidant activity. Antioxidants may be beneficial to our health. But H2O is not an antioxidant. It cannot be. Oxygen is an oxidizing agent. H2O is made up of hydrogen and oxygen. Both molecules are oxidizing agents. Some oxidation is necessary for life. Blood must be infused with oxygen. It is excess oxidation that is bad for our health and contributes to aging. That kind of oxidation is caused primarily by exposure to toxins in the environment and radiation from the sun. It occurs when the body produces more free radicals. To put it mildly, the alkaline water benefits have been overstated. What is even more disturbing is that the electrolysis devices do absolutely nothing to remove chemicals known to be present in tap water. A person might buy the device thinking that they can safely drink what comes out of their tap. This is simply not true. A good carbon selective filtration carbon filter that does not remove naturally occurring minerals is a far better investment for your health. Simply by removing chlorine, it reduces the acidity of the liquid. The bottom line is this. The purported alkaline water benefits are not supported by any scientific evidence. The ionizers are a waste of money. A home purifier that includes selective filtration costs around a hundred bucks and is actually a good investment.
