It's starting to look a lot like Christmas, which means an exponential increase in horrific household accidents. Certain, the holiday season comes with lots of great cheer and merrymaking, but it's also a time you're prone to wind up in the hospital.

Lucky for you, we've compiled a list of the vacation season's most common accidents and injuries. If you wish to keep the festivities free of medical bills and messy mishaps, continue reading.

1. Home Fires: Christmas Lights

This time of year is filled with pumpkin-scented candles, blazing hearths and cheap Christmas lights and that makes for a number of risk.

According to Forbes.com, over 400 Americans lose their lives to holiday-related fires each year, and 1,000 are hospitalized with injuries. Fires throughout the holiday season cost the country over $900 million in damage.

Do your favor and douse the lights when you are out. Maybe you're competing with neighbors together with your elaborate display of blinking Christmas beacons, but striking the switch when won't be there to enjoy them will save you cash on utilities and stop a fire.

Be sure to inspect your Christmas lights for frayed wires and loose connections. And make certain you don't use an indoor extension cord for your outdoor spectacle. Those cables are not waterproof, and could present a fire hazard in wet climates.

4. Decorating
